What is MSME?

Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are entities that are involved in the production, manufacturing and processing of goods and commodities. The concept of MSME was first introduced by the government of India through the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006. The Act provides a legal framework for the enterprise and ensures its development.

MSMEs encompass a wide range of businesses, from small manufacturing units to service providers. They operate across various sectors, including but not limited to:

1.      Manufacturing

2.     Textiles

3.     Food processing

4.     Handicrafts

5.     Automotive components

6.     Information Technology

7.     Healthcare

8.     Education

9.     Retail

10.  Agriculture and allied activities

The diversity of MSMEs contributes to their strength as a sector, allowing them to cater to various market needs and adapt to changing economic conditions.

How are MSMEs classified in India?

In India, MSMEs are classified on basis of investment in plant and machinery for Manufacturing Enterprises or investment in equipment for Service Enterprises, reflecting the country’s capital scarcity and labour abundance.

The MSME classification effective from July 1, 2020, has conferred several benefits:

1.   It allows more businesses to qualify as MSMEs, thereby expanding the pool of enterprises eligible for government support and benefits.

2.   The inclusion of turnover as a criterion provides a more accurate representation of the scale of operations.

3.   It aligns the MSME definition more closely with global standards, facilitating international comparisons and collaborations.
